The TWO DANS Rank the MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE

Check out this special presentation from ATALEOFTWODANS.COM – a website where two movie nerds named Dan (from different generational points of view: 80s vs 2000s) deconstruct movies, television, rumours, and all things geeky good.

This article pits GEN X (yours truly) vs THE MILLENIAL, as we both rank the MCU’s Dirty Dozen: all Phase One and Phase Two Marvel Studios movies.

Enjoy the sneak peak, then head on over to 2D to continue the story.

Ranking your favourite Marvel movies is an impossible task. They create so much fun and exciting content that it’s impossible to narrow it down. But the 2 Dans like making the impossible possible. So here’s our attempt at not pissing off all Marvel fans and putting together our favourite Marvel movies from Phase 1 and 2.

Enjoy!

GEN X RANKS 12 – 6

12. CAPTAIN AMERICA: FIRST AVENGER

The first act was the best part of this movie. Seeing the small and scrawny hero stand up tall was inspiring. The period setting and Chris Evans were impressive. However, the villainous Red Skull, the disappointing use of Buck, and the fact that the action is limited to a brief montage makes this the worst entry of the MCU. It’s not like I hate this movie. Really, it’s the least good of a bunch of really good movies.

HIGHLIGHTS: Hayley Atwell as Agent Carter, and Rogers hopping on a grenade.

11. THE INCREDIBLE HULK

The Hulk-out battles were pretty impressive. Ed Norton was alright as Banner, but Mark Ruffalo proved recasting was worth it. A bland romance and over-the-top action hinders the overall movie. The uneven approach felt like a serious drama mixed with a Saturday morning cartoon. At least the Hulk had a formidable opponent.

HIGHLIGHTS: Yonge Street (Toronto) Brawl, and Tim Roth chewing up the scenery.

10. THOR: THE DARK WORLD

A disappointing sequel with a forgettable villain and hokey multi-dimension storyline. I was excited to see what a Game of Thrones director would bring to Thor. The trailer made it seem like some good old fashioned battlefield sequences were in store. Instead, the opening sequence was rather brief and the baddie went all CGI.

HIGHLIGHTS: Cliffhanger ending, and some more glimpses at Asgard.

9. IRON MAN 2

This sequel went over the top. While it had some impressive sequences, like the Whiplash Nascar fight, it also had another forgettable villain. Let’s face it we go to these movies for the fun, and this movie had it. Downey is great as the lead, and the Iron Man moments are definitely entertaining. This was a rare disappointing performance from Sam Rockwell (as the baddie).

HIGHLIGHTS: War Machine, the jokes, and the Downey vs Gwyneth Paltrow back’n forths.
