Let’s REWIND to the year 2007.

These are personal TOP 10s ranking Oscar-nominated movies right alongside popcorn-munching blockbusters, indie films, b-movies, and cult classics.You never know, you might even uncover a hidden gem or two.

2007 was the year of small movies gone big… at least for me. My Top 10 is filled with non-blockbusters. That said, the #1 movie at the box office was PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END with $963 million worldwide. It was accompanied by some other shining turds like THE INVASION, THE NUMBER 23, SPIDER-MAN 3, and TRANSFORMERS.

My TOP 10 is followed by HONORABLE MENTIONS and the Best of ART VS POPCORN.

I was like yeah not a lot of great films in 2007 and then saw you had them all in your Top 10. 🙂 I hope you enjoy Away From Her. I saw it at BIFF that year and really loved it. Hot Fuzz and No Country for Old Men would be in my Top 10 but then probably Juno and 300 but it’s a year light on classics for me. As always enjoyed your Top 10. Haloween remake that good huh? Might have to check it out.

  2007 not the strongest year. Some good ones, but not blow you away good ones 🙂 Halloween is worth it if you’re a horror fan and want to learn a little more about the monster behind the mask. It’s not as good as Carpenter’s original though.

    Carpenter’s film is one of those classics where people now don’t realise how good it is because it changed everything and was heavily copied.

    Totally agree. When watching such influential older films, the contemporary viewer must imagine how it felt to see the genre cliche/tropes for the 1st time. It’s hard to erase all the films that copied the same ideas/techniques and NOT see the original as derivative. Imagine cinema without Carpenter’s influence? What would it look like? Would slashers/indie horror have exploded in the late 70s without him?

    That’s an excellent question, Tobe Hooper and Wes Craven were doing their thing beforehand but Halloween feels like a gamechanger.

    It may be the simple idea of a babysitter that ‘cracked’ the horror ‘code’. Rather than a group terrorized by another group, we had Michael Myers vs his own ‘family’. Also, this was a ‘baddie’ that didn’t talk. Oh yeah… and Carpenter’s simple, stripped back score may have something to do with it too.

  Thanks, Vinnie. I try to judge each movie on what they promise and how they execute. As a fan of Evil Dead 2 right along Tree of Life, I have no shame saying I love both equally. While I love to deconstruct poetic themes and obtuse metaphors, I also love visceral excitement and grand spectacle. Movies I like usually have one thing in common… interesting characters. For me, characters always lead the way.

    I believe we are similar in that respect. I’ll watch pretty much anything, as long as it interests. I’m always on the lookout for something new or different to see.

Wow. Even though we have the same #1, we’re kinda opposite on this year. I’ve seen 9 of your top 10 and I wasn’t all that fond of most of them. I must applaud you for including the Halloween. I thoroughly enjoyed that one. However, it’s downhill for me from here. I much preferred Planet Terror to the tedium of Death Proof when it came to the Grindhouse double feature. Tedium is also a word I use to describe Atonement. I thought Zodiac was 2/3 of a good movie. That last hour just dragged so badly for me. I flat out hate Into the Wild. The others I liked well enough, but wouldn’t get anywhere near my top 10.

Glad Gone Baby Gone, The Great Debaters, and Smokin’ Aces made your honorable mentions list. All excellent, as far as I’m concerned.

  Thanks for chiming in. I definitely have an eclectic taste. I like slow character pieces, so that may explain Zodiac and Into the Wild (which I also love the philosophy). There are some must-watches that really hurt. I can’t believe I haven’t seen PTA’s Blood. I’m saving it, at this point 😉
  And Deathproof… well, I love everything Tarantino does. I also love retro b-movies and muscle cars (Vanishing Point, etc).
  
  That’s what makes these Rewinds & Ranks so fun… the differences and the chance to go “WTF Dan? Deathproof?! Really?”
