SLIP/THROUGH Wins Creative Blogger Award!

Holy whack cinephiles, Batman!

SLIP/THROUGH just won a community award!

James from Back to the Viewer surprised the heck out of me the other day when he nominated me for the Creative Blogger Award. This is a community-based stamp of approval that I’m taking some pride in. Thanks, James!

You guys have to check out his site. This fellow nerd deconstructs movies with thoughtful analysis and impressive prose. Check out his reviews on FilmDoo too. We’ve debated geeky goodness like the power of Back to the Future, Marvel movies, and bourgeois cucumber batons.

I entered the movie review Internet world just recently (and still haven’t figured out social media… um, follow me on Twitter @slipthroughnerd). I owned and operated a movie store for nearly a decade. Talking movies all day and polluting the minds of your average film-goer was a pure delight. I kept getting told to start a blog. I didn’t know what that really meant.

Fast forward a bit, and you’re here, reading something on my nerdy little movie site. It’s definitely cool to connect with like-minded individuals. I had no idea this devoted community liked deconstructing movies just as much as I do.

Now, I’m also a part of two other great websites. 1: A TALE OF TWO DANS, run by myself and a fellow cinephile named Dan, tackling movies and television from two different generational points of view (the 80s vs the 2000s). We’ve got weekly and monthly columns, special feature presentations, trailer breakdowns, and tons of reviews.

2: THAT MOMENT IN, operating under the philosophy that every movie has one great moment. David leads an impressive roster of writers, navigating us through podcasts, lists, reviews, news, and weekly columns as our fearless leader.

A giant push-up-my-glasses-thank-you goes out to each and every reader out there. I had no idea I’d get a thousand views ever (let alone get the views I do today). Stay tuned for a big project coming soon.

Part of the nomination process is to list 5 facts about me, and nominate 5 other websites.

First things first…

  1. I’m an unproduced screenwriter. I’ve written in every genre and have several features, shorts, and series under my belt thus far. Check out THE LAST FOUNTAIN for an experimental presentation of a few of my screenplays in PICTUREplay format. Much like reviewing, its an incredible passion and immeasurable hobby.
  2. I attended Film School in Toronto. While it was focused on production, we also studied the craft.
  3. I secretly love opening those mystery subscription boxes from Japan. My current favourite is Tokyo Treat. It’s like candy Christmas once a month.
  4. My favourite films are Pulp Fiction and E.T. – for very different reasons. Pulp made me realize the power of the craft, from characters and dialogue, to structure and direction. E.T. made me emotionally connect to a special effects creation. Once I watched this, I knew movies could create a magical response in the audience.
  5. I love midnight screening genre films just as much as arthouse cinema. I have no problem saying I love Evil Dead 2 just as much as Mallick’s Tree of Life – again, for very different reasons.

I’d like to extend a nomination for the Creative Blogger Award to the following sites I check on a regular basis.

1) The Blazing Reel: I love Khalid’s Blazing Reel Awards for each year. He spotlights indie cinema alongside mainstream successes and hidden gems. He sticks to his informed opinions and is open to friendly debates.

2) The Creative Fox Den: Mel has got you covered with film reviews and weekly columns, but she also adds some flavour with home decor projects and mouth-watering cooking articles. I still laugh over her hilarious YouTube Paul Blart 2 review skit.

3) The Telltale Mind: Variety is king here. All things nerdy. From pulp-tastic covers, to comic books, to guilty pleasure TV, and classic movie reviews. I never know what I’m going to get when I visit this warped Mind. But I usually love it.

4) FilmMunch: Nelson vivisects films with thoughtful analysis and introspective theories. I love listening to his TMI podcasts, and enjoy his sarcastic wit. His site also mashes up the love of food with the love of cinema. This awesome place is for serious film fans.

5) That Moment In: My favourite online destination offers a variety of excellent content. The crisp clean graphical design is a big highlight, but content is king. The glossy magazine feel compliments the thoughtful deconstructions. Whether you like podcasts, lists, or in depth reviews, TMI has you covered.

I couldn’t be happier to be a part of David’s roster. He runs a tight ship, that more people need to travel on. I can’t believe the amount of dedication and quality of content on display. All of these weekly columns and podcast episodes are driven by a powerful concept: Every movie has one great moment. I’d say the same regardless of my affiliation. Check it out, and you’ll see what I mean.

Thanks again, James. I appreciate your nomination.

    1. Thanks, Mel… my fav thing was this frozen ice cream cookie thing. Imagine old school McDonald’s choc chip cookies, with top coated in ice cream (flavoured mix off vanilla, tangerine, pineapple, coconut, and pomegranate). Soooo good. Citrus sweet. Can’t tell you what it’s called though since I can’t read Japanese 😉

  1. Thank you very much much, Dan. This is a great honor. Thank you for all the kind words as well.
Also great to know you better, I had no idea that you’re an aspiring screenwriter, wish you all the best with this endeavour.

I definitely accept the award, I just don’t do particular posts (Sorry!) but I’ll be happy to give you 5 interesting facts about me. I’m not really all that interesting though, Haha.

1- I am seriously addicted to Coca Cola
2- I once forgot about a very important exam thinking it was on the next day when it was actually on that day.
3- I’m a massive Simpsons fan and have seen every episode at least five times.
4- I once cut my eat with a sheet of paper and had to get stitches. Don’t even ask how that happened
5- I can drink a 1.5 liter bottle of Coca Cola in under 3 minutes.

      2. Hahah your sense of humour definitely shines through there. Thanks for sharing, Khalid. Coke is my fav soft drink too. I used to watch Simpsons when it first came out. I was that kid running around, saying Eat my shorts. I even used to sing along with the CD they released.
