RANKING THE YEAR’S BEST: FROM OSCAR MOVIES TO BLOCKBUSTERS
Walk down memory lane… And let the movie nerd debate begin.
Let’s REWIND to the year 2006.

These are personal TOP 10s ranking Oscar-nominated movies right alongside popcorn-munching blockbusters, indie films, b-movies, and cult classics. You never know, you might even uncover a hidden gem or two.

2006 was an amazing year for independent cinema. There were some fantastic character focused stories this year. The Top 5 are absolutely incredible! The #1 movie at the box office was PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST with $1 billion worldwide. While there were some mind-blowing movies in the Top 10, 2006 also had its share of disappointments like X-MEN: THE LAST STAND nearly ruining the comic book franchise, LADY IN THE WATER nearly performing a finishing move on M. Night Shyamalan, and ULTRAVIOLET with Milla Jovovich as another ass-kicker.
My TOP 10 is followed by HONORABLE MENTIONS and the Best of ART VS POPCORN.

Children of Men is my #1 for ’06. What a phenomenal film. That said, I can’t begrudge anyone putting Pan’s Labyrinth at #1, either. Glad to see some love for the unfortunately forgotten Apocalypto. You have some quality films among your must-watch set, too.

Sounds like we dig on the same films. Awesome. Thanks for stopping by and checking out the Top 10s, Dell. Children of Men is great on so many levels. I loved the themes, but the direction was really bold at the time (with those long takes and the 360 car sequence – take that Birdman / Revenant hehehe). I was really impressed by Apocalypto too. So captivating and exciting. I want Gibson to do more historical adventures. Maybe he can do an ancient Egypt epic starring Idris Elba and Children of Men’s Chiwetel Ejiofor. That’d be excellent. I’m asking for the tale of Osiris 🙂

Another great list Dan, what’s surprising for me is how many films came out that year that I planned to see and still haven’t over a decade later. Comic book films were pretty shit that year eh?

Every year I miss so much too. Even if I watch like 2 or 3 movies a week, they all aren’t new flicks. And comic book movies would get better 😉 For me, it was tough to rank the Tops though. Black Book was a real surprise, for example. Sexy, provocative, and powerful – from the director of this year’s ELLE (Oscar nominated best actress).

There’s a bunch here that I have never seen. They look pretty good, might have to catch them at some point. Nice to see Pan’s Labyrinth as your top choice – completely agree with that one.

Thanks for chiming in 🙂 I loved Pan! So imaginative, beautiful conceptual designs, and interpretive narrative. All the best of cinema in one movie.
