REWIND & RANK: TOP 10 Movies of 1995

RANKING THE YEAR’S BEST: FROM OSCAR MOVIES TO BLOCKBUSTERS

Walk down memory lane… And let the movie nerd debate begin.

rewind1995

Let’s REWIND to the year 1995.

These are personal TOP 10s ranking Oscar-nominated movies right alongside popcorn-munching blockbusters, indie films, b-movies, and cult classics. You never know, you might even uncover a hidden gem or two.

1995 was a fantastic blend of indie cinema, genre greats, and blockbusters of all kinds. The Top 10 was quite a challenge to rank this year with some real highlights in the Honorable Mentions. The #1 movie at the box office was Pixar’s first movie TOY STORY with $373 million worldwide. 1995 didn’t avoid its fair share of bombs, with some bid budget disasters like CUTTHROAT ISLAND and JUDGE DREDD, as well as Wes Craven totally missing the mark with Eddie Murphy in VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN, and super-supermodel Cindy Crawford tanking it hard with FAIR GAME.

My TOP 10 is followed by HONORABLE MENTIONS and the Best of ART VS POPCORN.

    1. Definitely. It blew me away. A few animes have made my Tops over the years. I saw Ghost at the time it debuted (ie: before the Matrix), so I for sure noticed its influence over the years. Can’t wait for the live action adaptation. As a fan of the original, what do you think of the new remake?

      1. Nice. And especially rare in the Internet era 😉

I’m encouraged by some of the compositions (homaging direct frames from the anime) and the overall atmosphere of the trailer. It looks like the creators respect the original and aren’t hoping for a quick cash-in or something.

  1. What a wide range of films in that year. Good times. Okay let’s see Heat, Apollo 13, The American President, Twelve Monkeys, The Bridges of Madison County, Sense and Sensibility, The Usual Suspects, Seven, Braveheart, Goldeneye, Get Shorty, Clueless, Crimson Tide, Desperado, Dead Man Walking, To Die For, Toy Story, Heat, Die Hard with a Vengeance. Casino, While You Were Sleeping, Bad Boys. You could easily have a Top 25 including Before Sunrise, Il Postino, The Basketball Diaries all of which I haven’t seen. If pressed I’d say Apollo 13, The American President, Twelve Monkeys, The Bridges of Madison County, Sense and Sensibility, Seven, Braveheart and Heat. But that leaves out Toy Story and The Usual Suspects which have a far more reaching effect on how movies get made in the past 20 years. Thank you for highlighting this year Dan, I never realised how much our cupeth overflowed in ’95.

  2. A great year. I’ve got fond memories of watching Casino, Get Shorty and Heat (twice) at the cinema. La Haine and Smoke were two films I discovered and came to love after the event, and Clueless? That was so fetch, oh hang on, wrong movie!

    1. Hheheh ‘fetch’ wrong movie, right shade of pink 😉 Some good crime films this year though, eh. At the time, La Haine was pretty shocking and edgy. It’s still a little gem worth finding. It’s kinda cool you’ve seen it too. For me, I have fond memories of discovering that I needed glasses as a young teen me watching Species. Yuo can guess why I was squinting hehehe. Thanks for chiming in, Paul.

      1. I found it slow at the time too. I was around the same age and kinda watched it to see more Natalie Portman after Professional (who was a similar age). I think we rented this and Booty Call with Jamie Foxx back in the day, just to set the timeframe in more context. I loved that shoot-out tho. For me, I also appreciated it more as I got older and enjoyed storytelling more.
