REWIND & RANK: TOP 10 Movies of The 1970s – Part 2

RANKING THE YEAR’S BEST: FROM OSCAR MOVIES TO BLOCKBUSTERS

Walk down memory lane… And let the movie nerd debate begin.

rewind70s

Let’s REWIND to the 1970s…

…and take a look at 1975 – 1979

These are personal TOP 10s ranking Oscar-nominated movies right alongside popcorn-munching blockbusters, indie films, b-movies, and cult classics. You never know, you might even uncover a hidden gem or two.

The latter half of the 70s saw the birth of independent cinema, pushing the boundaries of entertainment. Grindhouse exploitation flicks also burst into midnight screenings across the land. That said, the late 70s also gave birth to the mega-influential summer blockbuster – which was a brand new idea at the time. The #1 movie at the box office from 1975-1979 was not a shocker, it was the original STAR WARS with $307 million domestically (not adjusted for inflation).

My TOP 10 is followed by HONORABLE MENTIONS.

  1. What a grand time. I’ve mentioned this before but I do feel like something shifted in this period and looking at the Top 10 for this piece only reinforces it. Maybe what is interesting is that there were always blockbusters and award season films but maybe after this period less cross over of the two. Secondly that the blockbusters from this period have included such classics which we still remember whereas perhaps blockbusters from other time periods did not attempt nor succeed in doing this so well. Maybe. As for your Top 10, full of classics. Couldn’t begin to think what I would put in.
