This edition of CINEMA REMEMBERED deconstructus the interpretive elements of Guillermo Del Toro’s masterpiece, PAN’S LABYRINTH.
THIS WEEK:Pan’s Labyrinth (2006). Set in 1944 Spain, this dark and twisted fairy tale follows a little girl in a world at war. She escapes into a mysterious and fantastic underworld filled with mythical creatures.
HOW IT STARTS: A young girl plays in a dense forest, when she discovers a strange looking creature buzzing around and enters her own fairy tale.

THE PREFACE:Guillermo del Toro is a master of visual filmmaking. He infuses his imagery with so much atmosphere and intricate design work. Del Toro films transport you to another world. This concept is paralleled in the fairy tale story of Pan’s Labyrinth. A little girl uses her imagination to escape the horrors of war and get transported to another world.

SLIP/THROUGH - Entertainment You Don't Want to SLIP THROUGH the Cracks 
Love the fairytale feel this movie has. Its also the best thing that del Toro has ever done and a great canvas for him to showcase his unique style

Thanks for commenting, Khalid. This is my fav Del Toro too. Although, I’m still ding to see his “brushstrokes” on the Lovecraft adaptation In the Mountains of Madness. That has some potential.

If you haven’t read HP Lovecraft’s short stories, check em out. Horror and scifi blend with some quantum physics.

Dan, do you think I’d like this movie? A part of me loves fairy tales and a part of me HATES the unbelievable 😀

Thanks, Paola… I think this is a magical film, with a pure sense of fantasy and wonder. The designs are breath-taking. That said, it is a little freaky. Some of the creatures look really whimsical, but some are frightening for sure. There is also some darker content regarding the war and family problems. I really think it’s worthwhile, but be prepared to cover your face with a pillow or something 😉 The best part of the movie is going on this adventure with a troubled girl, and believing in hope for her. If you do watch it, please let me know what you think.

Dan, I just watched the movie and I didn’t like it… I loved it!! The fairy tale is beautiful and I could easily identify with the real story. Thank you! 🙂
And I didn’t need a pillow to cover my face, I just closed my eyes a bit when I saw the syringe 😀
