New images from the latest X-MEN movie recently hit the Interwebs, giving us our first glimpses of Olivia Munn as PSYCLOCKE and Oscar Isaac as APOCALYPSE.
The next movie in the FIRST CLASS universe also marks the debut of traditional characters like JEAN GREY and CYCLOPS. Just like a shopping channel informercial, “And that’s not all!” We also got to see images of Nightcrawler, Storm, and the returning Jennifer Lawrence as MYSTIQUE.
Let’s dig in to these images real quick and nerdy-like.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY consistently breaks the biggest nerdiest stories. EW is one of the best entertainment magazines out there. They’re the source for all these totally rad images. These first glimpses are awesome. Storm looks like right out of the 80s comics. And Psylocke looks right out the 90s Jim Lee drawn editions.
Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse looks a little goofy. At least here. I’m sure he’ll sell it with his performance. He’s a great actor from stuff like the Coens INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS and this year’s best movie (so far), EX MACHINA.
But the purple make-up looks more Frankenstein meets a kid’s show like POWER RANGERS, and less like the imposing figure from the comics. Obviously, the scaled down version makes sense, but this character’s look in the comics is rather different.
Psylocke stands side by side with Apocalypse in the EW images. So it looks like she at least starts the film as one of the Four Hoursemen, along with Storm. I wonder how Archangel factors in?
Pyslocke is one of my favourite X-Men. She’s basically a ninja with psychic energy abilities, like a energy based blade.
Her minuscule skimpy costume was a real highlight for teenage me. Thankfully, it looks like the film pretty much keeps the same design. Olivia Munn’s casting is looking better and better all the time.
Olivia Munn is a long time favourite of mine, from early skits on ATTACK OF THE SHOW, to her stellar co-starring role in HBO’s NEWSROOM. My earlier article about her casting dives right into the nerdy. Check it out, if you’d like to more.
Since then, Munn also released a sword training video on Instagram. This not only proves there will be swordplay in this sequel, but also that Munn is capable.
Sophie Turner from GAME OF THRONES plays the young Jean Grey. It looks like she’s one of the New Mutants joining Xavier’s school for the gifted. It will be interesting to see her character’s origin story and how she learns to deal with her powers. Afterall, she will eventually become the most powerful mutant of all. For now, it looks like Apocalypse takes the mantle.
We also got our first look at Tye Sheridan from TREE OF LIFE and MUD, as a young Cyclops. This another powerful mutant with lethal powers. It will be really interesting to see how he learns to control his powers too.
I’m guessing since Bryan Singer is back in the director’s chair, there will still be a focus on character. The most intriguing part here is how Cyclops and Jean Grey develop their romantic relationship.
Storm shows up as an initial baddie. I was hoping to see Xavier recruit her, thieving on the streets of Cairo or something. It looks like she’s a henchmen for Apocalypse here. I really like that she has the 80s punk mohawk. Let’s hope she has an attitude to match it.
Jennifer Lawrence returns as Mystique. This character has seen a lot of development due to Lawrence’s sky-rocketing career. Her powers of transformation and mimicry can be pushed even further.
I can’t wait to see here slowly shift to the darkside under Magneto’s influence. It’s an interesting character arc.
A couple of other new characters also get added to the mutant roster, like JUBILEE and NIGHTCRAWLER. While we’ve seen the blue-skinned teleporter before, we have yet to see young Jubilation Lee. She’s kind of like Dazzler. Her powers are launching energy-like projectiles. Nerds might remember her from the old 90s X-MEN animated series. Her costume here is spot on.
A trailer dropped at Comic Con, but hasn’t hit online yet. Once it does, check back here for some nerdy deconstruction. For now, these images are really encouraging.
This is Bryan Singer’s universe. I’m so glad to see him behind the lens again. It’s a real stamp of approval. Plus, we have returning cast members like James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto.
All signs point to rad… ‘Nuff Said.
