SLIP/news: LEGO MOVIE Directors To Helm HAN SOLO Movie

— SLIP/news —
<< A quick nerdy take on today’s entertainment news. >>

Every year until 2020, we will have a STAR WARS movie to enjoy. Movie nerds everywhere are ecstatic at this mere fact alone.

In between each Episode there will be an “Anthology” film. One of these spin-offs is a HAN SOLO prequel.

Today news hit the Interwebs by way of Variety, that Phil Lord & Chris Miller will direct this Han Solo project. These are the guys who brought us 21 JUMP STREET and THE LEGO MOVIE… so what are they doing in science fiction?

Aside from all the laughter and fun of these movies, they also had impressive action sequences — especially LEGO.

Imagine this outside possibility: What if Lord & Miller were hired because this is an animated film? This may upset a lot of fans, but then again so would re-casting Han Solo. This way Harrison Ford can voice the role. I’m not saying it’d be Lego Animation, but maybe bigger budget CGI.

Keep in mind that Disney owns Lucasfilm. This is a prime opportunity to have a family oriented STAR WARS movie. I’m sure they will do an animated feature somewhere down the line, anyways. These two filmmakers have already proven with LEGO that they can make a movie the whole family can enjoy.

By accommodating the family demographic, it might free up Disney to approve a darker film in the franchise that’s more suitable for adults.

Lord & Miller seem like true movie nerds who are enthusiastic about their projects. It’s a really exciting opportunity. Han Solo has always had that wry smile, and cynical sense of humour. It could be really fun to watch him get into trouble during his younger days as a smuggler.

Maybe we’ll get to see that infamous card game where he won the Millenium Falcon off of Lando? Or maybe we’ll watch him beat the Kessel Run record by a few parsecs? Fingers crossed.

Will we get to see Han Solo & Chewbacca’s story from the beginning? Will Solo free the Wookie from slavers?

Here’s a quote from Lord & Miller’s official statement. I hope it helps calm any fears.

“We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us… the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

Miles Teller for Solo?

Today’s nerdy bit of news also begs the question… Who will play the younger Han Solo? Look to my earlier article for some more analysis.

Earlier rumours suggested Aaron Paul from BREAKING BAD. I’d prefer someone like Miles Teller from WHIPLASH. Teller has proven he can act, and has also shown his comedic abilities in several films.

Who do you think should play Han Solo?

If you’re still a little hesitant of these young comedy directors taking over your favourite franchise, fear not. Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan are writing the screenplay. The elder Kasdan is responsible for stuff like THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. So… Nerd certified stamp of approval there.

Are you super-pumped? Try and remain calm. This spin-off anthology film is still a release date far, far away. The rumoured target is May 25, 2018.

    1. I’m always excited for STAR WARS. But I get the apprehension. I wonder how young they’ll cast? Or could this movie be animated and Harrison Ford can still voice the character? This is the Lego guys and Disney working together. 😉
